Starting point for Martha’s Run 2002 at Mt. Lebanon High School
Martha’s Run, which started in 1997, is held in honor of Martha Dixon Martinez, a Mt. Lebanon High School alumna and FBI special agent, who in 1994 was killed in the line of duty. The run raises money to improve area parks.

When the U.S. entered World War I, 135 Mt. Lebanon men enlisted. Upon leaving for service, each young man was presented with a money belt made by the local Red Cross unit, which operated out of the Ammann Avenue School. Eleven of these young men were wounded, and one, George Hackney, did not return. Above, a plaque dedicated to those men was installed outside Mt. Lebanon Cemetery on October 18, 1919.
Uniontown In 1961, Coach Dick Black (center) made history when he coached his players to a WPIAL championship that advanced the team to the semifinals of the PIAA tournament. It was the school’s most successful basketball season.

McCormick, a schoolteacher, built this house at Washington Road and Hazel Drive around 1880 when he married Nancy Fife. Jake Miller, the hired man, holds the horses, Nancy stands, and McCormick’s sisters Ida and Martha sit sidesaddle. The house stood until the 1950s.

A Mt. Lebanon High School grad, George Edward Abbott entered the Army Air Corps in October 1943. He was on his 19th mission over Cologne, Germany, when a shell hit his plane. He was the only person on board to die.

The Kulhman house stood at 731 Washington Road. In January 1920, four and a half acres of the Kulhman’s orchards fronting Washington Road were purchased and leveled to make way for Washington School.

Built in 1856 and surrounded by strawberry, daisy, and grazing fields, the Abbott farmhouse was located in what is now the Beverly Road area—Lincoln School was later built on what was the Abbott’s pasture. This family picture was taken around 1905. In 1926, Edward Abbott Jr., (far left), sold the land to a developer and moved to a house at 278 Beverly Road.

Mt. Lebanon’s growing population of Reform Jews founded Temple Emanuel in 1951. For years they used facilities around the community for services, including Howe School’s gym, until a building could be erected on Bower Hill Road. The first level was completed in 1955 and the entire temple in 1962.
As Mt. Lebanon’s Catholic population expanded after World War II, a need for a second church became apparent. The diocese chose a spot near the Castle Shannon border. St. Winifred School opened in 1962 and the church the following year. This 1961 photo shows construction
In 1919, the diocese purchased land on Washington Road and hired architect William Perry to design a church, school, and rectory. Construction took decades to complete as temporary buildings, such as this one that was later replaced by the school, were erected and razed between 1920 and 1962 when the project was finally completed.

The Higbee School was built in 1794 in what is now Upper St. Clair. It is said to be the first schoolhouse “west of the Alleghenies.” In the 1930s, the Mt. Lebanon Lions Club moved the building to Mt. Lebanon Park and opened it as a teen center. It was razed in the 1950s.

In the early 1970s, as student enrollment swelled to more than 8,700 students, the high school underwent an expansion that included a fine arts wing at right.

Mt. Lebanon High School opened its doors to grades seven through nine in the fall of 1930 and to grades ten through twelve in the fall of 1931.
Dr. Ralph Horsman (left) came to Mt. Lebanon as a math teacher in 1929 and went on to serve as an elementary, junior high, and high school principal and assistant superintendent before becoming the school district’s superintendent in 1946. When he retired in 1969, the street around the high school was named for him.

Eugene Holmes Shaffer began his long career with the school district in 1949 as an “elementary cadet.” Over the next 32 years, Shaffer would teach at Lincoln and Jefferson Elementary Schools, Jefferson Junior High and the high school before joining the administrative ranks in 1965. He created the logo that the school district used for many years and launched the district’s communications program.

For the first time in the district’s 67-year history, Mt. Lebanon schoolteachers went on strike September 4, 1979. The strike lasted six weeks. Corporal William D. Morgan, a 1966 Mt. Lebanon High Schooll grad died in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. This 1968 picture shows him aboard the USS Newport News
Cpt. Paul Mullen grew up on Ordale Boulevard and graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1936. In 1942, after graduating from Notre Dame, he enlisted as a naval aviation cadet and eventually became a Black Sheep Squadron member. He died February 12, 1946, when, during a routine training flight, his plane collided with another plane.
