When the mines closed in 1923, he town’s 500 residents were absorbed into neighboring communitiesJohn Hallam, seated center with ball, formed the first Beadling soccer team in 1898. It was an outlet for the coal miners, many of whom had come from European countries with soccer traditions. It was such a beloved game that coal miners who played the game received preferred treatment in the mines. When coal was being extracted, Mt. Lebanon residents could feel the mining explosions 40 to 50 feet below the surface.
