Medgar Evers – Race Agitator: The Cause Can Live On

Important Note: This program will be held at the Fine Arts Theater, Mt. Lebanon HS

Deemed a “race agitator” by his enemies, Medgar Evers was the first, and least known, of the five major political assassinations of the 1960s. A powerful Civil Rights leader who connected youth activists with the older NAACP, Evers also was a model husband, father, patriot and citizen. A WWII veteran, he refused to leave Mississippi despite pleas from loved ones. Mostly considered a historical footnote today, the story of Medgar Evers should be better remembered so, as his wife put it after his death, “the cause can live on”.

Mt. Lebanon High School teacher and resident, Pete DiNardo explores the life story, influences upon, and impact of Medgar Evers, an inspiration American. Evers inspires us, as noted in his wife Mrylie’s comments to a crowd gathered at the Pearl Street Baptist Church less than a day after his death, “the cause can live on.”

This talk is the first of a three part series and the launch of an initiative to feature Mt. Lebanon teachers in public forums.
